Renowned cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, celebrated for his exceptional skills as a spinner, has made headlines by becoming the co-owner of a new franchise in the Global Chess League. Ashwin, who currently plays for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, has now ventured into the world of chess by acquiring a stake in the American Gambits team.
Second Season to be Held in October
The Global Chess League, jointly owned by Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation, debuted its first season in 2023. The league’s second season is scheduled to take place in October 2024, with Ashwin’s American Gambits joining as a new team. This team will replace the Chingari Gulf Titans in the tournament. The upcoming season will be hosted in London from October 3 to October 12.
CEO Samir Pathak’s Statement
Samir Pathak, CEO of the Global Chess League, expressed excitement over the new partnership. He stated, “We are delighted to have them on board as we continue to expand our rapidly growing chess league. Ashwin’s reputation as a player and chess enthusiast, coupled with Prachur PP’s deep attachment to chess and business acumen and Venkata Narayan’s leadership, promises significant growth for the league.”
Six Teams to Compete
In a press release, Ashwin shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to introduce American Gambits to the chess world. Our team, with its strategic talent and unwavering determination, aims to redefine the game. As a co-owner, I am excited to witness their journey and contribute to their success.”
The Global Chess League will feature a total of six teams: Alpine SG Pipers, PBG Alaskan Knights, Ganges Grandmasters, Triveni Continental Kings, American Gambits, and Mumba Masters.
